Proper footwear is such an important component to injury free running! Every runner is different and unique, so I don’t believe that one shoe fits all and part of being a smart athlete is doing your research and finding what equipment works best for you. Did you know that generally, a running shoe will last 300-600 miles before you will need to get a new pair? So once you find the perfect running shoe for you, it is important to wear those shoes only for running. Don’t wear them to a theme park or grocery shopping. If you hit the gym regularly for a group fitness class or to lift weights, get a training shoe for that. Keep your running shoes separate so you can better track how many miles you have on them and when it is time to get a new pair. I like to have a few pairs of the same shoe that I rotate throughout a training cycle.

Here is a dynamic warm-up that I do daily before a run or strength workout.

The benefits of the Altra Escalante 2

All Altra shoes have Zero Drop technology. Many traditional running shoes are designed with an elevated heel, which may contribute to improper running form and high impact over striding.

The Zero Drop platform that is featured in every Altra shoe places the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground. This encourages proper alignment for the feet, back and body posture and promotes and low-impact landing.

Altra shoes are Foot Shaped with a wide toe box that allows your toes to spread out naturally, while keeping the big toe in a straight alignment. This can help increase stability and reduce over-pronation.

Along with proper footwear there are several things that you can do to have a long, injury free recreational running career. I say “recreational running career” because I myself, as well as (I’m sure) most of you reading this are not professional runners. I often need to remind myself that I am many things before I am a runner. I am a wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend and therefore I need to give myself grace when life gets busy and I don’t get in as many runs as I had planned on. Running and training while balancing life, work, kids, sports, school activities, homework, and all other life responsibilities is tough at times. Finding balance is key and just doing the best you can with what you have each day is so important, and learning not to be so dang hard on ourselves!

Tips for injury free running

1. Proper Footwear-

I pretty much covered this above, but I highly suggest trying out Altra’s Escalante 2 shoe. I love how lightweight yet cushioned and how much support this shoe has. It really is a game changer for me!

2. Proper Training-

I get that this is pretty broad, but the most important thing with proper training is the balance in mileage increase with adequate rest and recovery. If you are unsure of how this should look then you might want to consider hiring one of our BeFitDavis qualified coaches. Email me or just comment below and I am happy to help you.

3. Running Form-

If a client is struggling with chronic injury or not showing consistent improvement or progress in their training, we can assess and give input on their running form. Some ways to improve running form are to take a running form class, video yourself or to watch elite runners and study their form. A few quick and simple tips that you can apply today are to relax, run tall, shorten your stride, keep compact arms and focus on your core. I will expand more on these soon, so be sure to follow me on Instagram for all the tips tricks and to follow my personal training journey.
